Author Topic: Trying to get my hands on a preinstalled Google Chrome for mac.  (Read 1570 times)

So my nephew has a laptop that he can't use installers on. Nothing can be installed, but If I used a flashdrive with a preinstalled copy it would work. Any idea on how I can get this?

wait what

installing doesn't work?

how?

It's got like parental settings. It's a laptop from school and I'm trying to get Chrome on it.

well i'd ASSUME that you'd install chrome on your own computer and put that on a flash drive or something

i'm really just guessing here

There's a trick my friends and I used on our school laptops, and we had the same issue. The thing that prevented installs for our Windows computers was not being able to install in Program Files, and not being able to edit the registry. We would essentially look up portable versions of different apps which were essentially .zip folders with executable files and such. Portable apps are essentially already installed, except they can be moved anywhere you need them to be.

I'm not sure if it works the same for mac, but I found this: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/36246/portable-chromium
Since Google Chrome is proprietary, you might not be able to easily find a portable version of that, so I went for Chromium instead, which is pretty much the same thing, but open source. You can go ahead and look for it yourself anyway if you prefer Chrome, though.

install chrome to a folder
put folder in flash drive
put flash drive in laptop
victory??

Almost certain there is a reason for Windows installers and Mac installers. Like .exes.

Alright i'm gonna try that. The default browser doesn't have something built in that chrome does that I need. Hopefully this does.

how the forget? you? but it? tkgfmhvzdjlkh you have to be able to instal on a PCbncjvkbdj this is pissing me off. there shouldn't be such a thing as a computer that you cant install things on

Some administrators are really afraid of viruses, that and they don't want you to "weigh down your computer's performance" with extra installed programs, and they don't want us installing games on our computers (or even running them).

If I were in charge of giving kids laptops for a school, I'd probably put a parental setting on it, too.

Ok, here's the thing about Mac and application installations.

Often, all the installer does is create a folder somewhere in your Library for the application (and sometimes it doesn't), and moves the application to the Applications folder. Sometimes more in-depth applications create folders in other areas of the Library, and sometimes populate them with files, but for the most part, they are self-contained, unlike many .exes, which will give you an error if you remove a file from some obscure folder. If you can, install Chrome on another Mac, or find an already-installed copy somewhere, and simply put it somewhere on the hard drive. That should work.

You can go to Google Chrome's website and when you hit Download, you can hit "For another OS" or something along those lines and it will work iirc.

That downloads a dmg file that you have to install. Kingdaro already listed the best alternative.
