Author Topic: Desperate help with computer, ransomware took it over.  (Read 1485 times)

Ok, first of all, I have absolutely no idea how this happened. I was just reading some news articles, turned off my computer, and when I turned it back on, some FBI thing came up. I really need help because I'm screwed. How do I remove it? Is the time limit real? Should I just format my computer?

stop downloading random stuff off the internet

stop downloading random stuff off the internet
It was not my fault, I didn't download anything.
News articles where?
just regular gaming new articles. I didn't visit any rogue websites.

this really is not helping

fry your harddrive
anyway
does it say something about paying a 300$ moneypak bill?
then definitely your comp caught the cold of the fbi moneypak virus
it should be easy to fix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuctc1_g0as

not %100 on this but you may be able to close whatever process is causing problems if you Ctrl+Alt+Del as soon as you sign in. I got rid of the one on my mom's computer but it still totally forgeted some of her stuff up. (encrypted all her pictures)

Also to get rid of it, there is like a million guides on the internet. Shouldn't be too hard. Rkill helps kill the process and keep it from coming up for a while and Malwarebytes or some other program should get rid of it.

This actually happened to me and I was able to get it to go away. Which is saying something because I don't know stuff about computers. I followed this article. I believe it revolves around starting the computer in safe mode and restoring it to a point before the ransomware took over.

or it also might be cryptolocker
which i have absolutely no idea how to fix sadly
let me go dig up some tutorials:

you still might be forgeted even if you remove it
because it still completely encrypts the files and even if you remove it, it wont undo it

god loving dammit, windows 8 doesn't have a safe mode.

No wait it does, I'll take care of it tomorrow.

last time i had to deal with this i just booted into a linux liveCD and mounted the C:\ drive and took anything i needed off of it, formatted the drive and reinstalled windows

I'm pretty sure all operating systems are like contractually obliged to have a safe boot option. Try holding down Shift and F8 while your computer boots. Word on the street says that's the key for windows 8.

What the hell, that's stupid. I'd just search for some windows 8 tutorial if you can then. That's how I stumbled across my fix when I had the virus.

go on researchhub like a normal person
