I don't understand why I can't get the PS4

My brother is getting a 3DS XL, while he has a 3DS already so I don't understand why. I want a PS4, while I have a PS3 and the only reason (other than the price but I offered to pay half or something) my parents have is because "The PS4 is the same thing as the PS3, just a larger version" but I pointed that out to the 3DS and the 3DS XL (which is just a bigger sized 3DS) but I swear she is getting him it for christmas.

But you don't get the logic here, the PS4 is a totally different system with different graphics/different cpu/different software/ etc. The 3DS XL is just a larger version of something he already has, or I am just missing something here?

The PS3 will just be completely ignored in the near future, everyone will be using a PS4 instead. If he'd want online multiplayer, or the newest games, he'd need a PS4.
