Author Topic: BitVid - An upcoming competitor for YouTube  (Read 1353 times)

Don't get your hopes up yet; project begun only a few weeks ago. Apparently they will have a beta read early 2015. Right now reddit is best place to learn more about BitVid: http://www.reddit.com/r/BitVid

I'm excited.

Not to sound overly pessimistic but I'm not expecting anything to happen.

People are hating the changes to youtube that much that theyre making a new youtube?

They way I understood, yes.

Anytime something advertises itself as a product killer it's most likely nowhere near as good. Often it's just riding on the coattails of some recent problems people have been whining about.

But why is this going to be a competitor for youtube? There are plenty of other video hosting sites out there and none of them are as popular as youtube. Youtube also already has plenty of popular people making videos and oodles and oodles of cash. So this just sounds like any other video hosting site out there.

As far as I know they do not intend to replace YouTube. You really can't do that. YouTube is too popular. I believe their aim is to provide a high quality video hosting service without being associated with Google.

For me the biggest drawback is resolution. Currently (according to Wikipedia) only the following video hosting sites allow for 1080p or larger: DaCast, Internet Archive, YouTube, and Vimeo. And on Vimeo it costs money.
