Hey, so i have built a computer, but have no OS so i was going to try Ubuntu, i have used unetbootin to create a bootable USB on but when i plug it in my computer and boot with the usb it says "Missing operating system". Any ideas on how to fix this?

Try pendrive linux or whatever its called?
I use it, it works a lot better then unetbootin

oh forget i knew nal would be here

Yeah, it's great if you're in a lazy mood:

Also, check to see if it actually copied anything to the drive.
That error sounds like it never actually did.

If you're installing Ubuntu Server Edition (version 12?), there is a glitch with the pendrive installation where it doesn't read the flash drive has been mounted. I would just use a CD if a drive is available as it's a pain in the ass to mount it via the internal command line.

I should have said before sorry, im on a Mac so i dont think i can run those programs, will they work through wine?

If you're on Mac just run the software through parallels. Wine could work, but emulation has its issues.

Im still getting the "Missing operating system".

Have you checked the bootloader? It's possible your MBR (Master Boot Record) is corrupt. Try flushing it or checking to see if the flash drive is marked as bootable (or is even bootable).

How do i check this?

I would recommend a helpful dose of google.

Try a different drive, sandisk usually is bootable.
Are there any other OS's on the drive?

Did you choose the correct device in the boot menu?

Did you press F2 or F12/10/whatever during boot to get to the menu and selected your usb drive?

step two: it's your computer do w/e you want and ignore nonnel
