It can work, but only if the parents/teachers are competent and you're also involved in other things. I've been homeschooled most of my life, but my dad is also a college teacher, and I've also been involved in multiple orchestras, robotics clubs, etc, which bring in the social aspect. My family also collectively loves to travel, so we take a lot of road trips and visit as many historical sites as possible (I've been in all the states except for Rhode Island, Hawaii, and Alaska). But not everybody has a dad like that, or opportunities for those sorts of activities outside of school. Not all schools are created equal, either. I tried going to a local school for a while, it didn't work out quite as well and my performance actually dropped significantly, though it went back to normal when we resumed homeschooling. So it really somewhat irks me when people say "homeschooling is better" or "public schools are better", blah blah blah. It depends completely on the places and people around you.
