You either

A. Lose your rank by not playing compeitive for a bit
B. Derank to the below rank when you lose a match and were generally suited for that rank

Abandons can affect rank as well, you'll take the loss as if you were there the whole time if your team loses without you.

edit: oh and i should add it seems like the elo difference doesnt happen until after the games ended if you abandoned. you can see if its ended or not by checking the "watch" thing and then looking at your recent matches

I literally have never left a game early once and I have never been kicked from a comp match

I've only been kicked when my internet was being total stuff and asked to be kicked (So at least there was a bot :/)

I've had situations where I need to leave or my internet goes out and it forcibly has me abandon, which sucks

either storms happen and my computer shuts off, or that rare moment when I have a team of handicaps and already know i'm gonna lose 2-16, so I just cut my losses in ELO by abandoning
