My Macbook has a fan, but there's no vent to let any hot air out.  It also has a metal case so it just heats up and stays hot.

wonder if you can replace your GPU with that method, i have a laptop and i would do anything to replace this crappy HD graphics :(
no. it is impossible to replace gpu in a laptop

there is no such a thing as a fan with no vent

It actually does have a vent. It's a slot in the case that is near where the screen is attached. So there is a vent, and yes, it does an awful job letting heat out of the case.
