Author Topic: Is it possible to transfer data between severs?  (Read 1127 times)

I might be dreadfully mistaken, as I usually stay away from networking, but is it possible to transfer data (chat, score, saves, etc.) between servers in realtime? If so, it could make for a very fun gaming experience, having a multi-server megaworld, perfect for a gigantic RPG or something (without overloading one server or maxing out the brick limit).

Thoughts? Note that this networking jazz would not have to be completely contained within Blockland itself (but if it could be, that'd be great).

I seem to remember a mod that linked the chat or something somehow, but required certain ports to be port forwarded
but yes, it is possible to have servers communicate with eachother, forcing people to join another server while ingame would probably require a client mod though

Ok, that basically answers the question of data transfer. Now the question is, would someone be willing to make an addon that entails the above features? I'd do it myself, except I am not much of a networking guy, so I'd fail pretty hard. ;-;

What are you even trying to do?

What you asked for in the OP is possible, but for what use?

transferring the score/chat shouldn't be too hard, but why transfer the saves when you can just have them pre-downloaded?

I think somebody in Scattered Space was working on a project where bans and server preferences were synced between servers, but that's not exactly what you need.

Anyway, yes it's possible.

Well, at the moment, there is nothing in particular I'd use this for. But it would be useful for, as stated in the OP, linking servers together to create a sort of "super-server", increasing vehicle, player, and brick limits (kinda like how some open world games and RPGs are set up).

That was just an example of something that could be transferred. But it could be useful - for example, if an admin edits a part of something that is universal across all the servers, a proprietary saving system could sync it between servers.

That's not how it works.

he's not saying starting 3 servers at once for more power

he's saying to have like 5 servers and having them for different realms for an rpg or something

That's not how it works.
what do you mean

he doesn't want the objects and players in the server to physically interact

it would be used to go to another "area" of the map physically separate from the other with the same stats

exactly

And I found another use - minigame servers. You can have several games on different servers where your score and maybe a shop are shared cross-server.

that clan is still active?
It's a community and is still active on multiple games.

What everyone else is saying is what I mean.
