all religons have pretty weird or disgusting stuff about them. like that part in the bible where the guy was gonna sacrifice his kid because god told him to, but then he told him to stop at the last minute.
God promised Abraham that he would be the father of a great nation, and that this would be seen through his son Isaac. Abraham was very obedient to God throughout his life, and trusted God's plan to be the best. He trusted God so much that he believed even if he sacrificed his son, God would keep His word to him and bring Isaac back from the dead. Abraham knew of the power of God, and knew Him to be holy and just, and knew that he would bring his son back from the dead, and in the end, God's promise held.
I think oftentimes people forget the attributes of God and approach the more intense and destructive events in the Bible thinking of God as being like one of us, capable of betrayal and deception. Therefore they are horrified at the events such as the great flood, the Israelites destroying the Canaanites, and even something as small as circumcision, and come out with a misconception of who God is and are very undesiring of Him. What they forget is that God is holy and perfect, and we can always trust Him. They also sometimes forget the wickedness of the people God enacted judgement against.
For example, in the case of the Canaanites, they were a wicked and perverted culture. They practiced evil acts such as cultic prostitution and child sacrifice by fire. God gave them over 400 years to repent, showing them totally undeserved mercy and grace, but they rejected him continuously. Therefore, God used the Israelites as a tool of judgement upon them, completely destroying their nation. God's action was justified and holy; the Canaanites were neither innocent nor deserving anything from God, and rejected Him even after he showed them immense forgiveness.
