Author Topic: I showed the Oculus to employee's at my mom's office.  (Read 8986 times)

There were some flight delays so it hasn't shipped from Ontario, Canada on time. Due to the snow the order had to be delayed to today. It's in Oklahoma City now, so it'll be here tomorrow. I ordered it on New Years.

You do realize you bought the prototype right?

Your gonna need to code stuff into it for it to work.
...you know that...right?

I don't think you know what you are talking about. It's a delevoper kit but it has full functionality. The newer versions will be lighter and have more pixels but it weighs about a pound already and I'm not waiting a year for some extra pixels.

I would guess only 1/5th or less of the people who are buying it are getting it to script with as a developer. It has modded support for Skyrim, Half Life 2, Portal, Mirror's Edge, Minecraft, and there are a lot of games designed exclusively for it.

I would buy it just to play with all of the amazing tech demos on the website.

Last thing I heard about the Oculus Rift, it was still in Beta and you needed a base code input to do anything.
The games it comes with still require code inputs to run correctly.

It's the reason I have not bought one yet.

Here's the websites guide on how to get started, they suggest TF2:

If you have never played Team Fortress 2 before, we recommend playing your first game on a monitor, not VR. There are a lot of helpful tutorial messages your first time through but unfortunately the text is very hard to read on the Rift.
Make sure your Oculus Rift is plugged in and turned on before starting Team Fortress 2.
A common error is to make the head strap too tight. It's not a pair of ski goggles - you're not going jogging with it on. Comfort is important, and the right tension helps position the display the correct distance from the eyes.
Another common error is to not use the adjustment wheels on the sides - if using the A vision lenses, most people will want to adjust it all the way out. The Rift ships with them all the way in, so make sure you adjust them so they're all the way clockwise on the left side, all the way counterclockwise on the right side.
In Team Fortress 2 click on Options, then Video, then pick Enable from the Virtual Reality menu.
Make sure you enable the developer console by going to Options/Keyboard/Advanced... and ticking "Enable Developer Console". You can bring it down using the tilde (~) key (for non-US keyboards, it's whatever key is at the top-left above Tab and next to 1). Most of the VR controls are currently on Console Variables or "convars".
    Restart the game
Click the "Activate Virtual Reality" button on the main menu.
Although you can just start playing with the default settings, to avoid discomfort it is highly recommended that you calibrate the device for your eyes. See "Calibrating your Inter-Pupillary Distance" below.
If you use the "A" vision lenses in the Rift, you don't need to do anything to let the game know. If you have switched to the "B" or "C" lenses, you will need to set the oculus_lens_type convar to "B" or "C" respectively.
If you have any questions or comments about VR mode, please visit the TF2 Virtual Reality forum.

I don't see any coding requirements in here. I think you are misinformed. Just a quick glance on youtube shows people who obviously can't script using it fine.

It's still an inferior product. Low-res displays, higher than ideal latency, and the motion detection is not yet implemented fully.

im waiting till its out of dev kit

You should try to make it support Blockland.
Blockland + Oculus Rift = loving amazing.
I heard from Badspot that Kompressor has a Oculus Rift Dev kit. I have proof in some photos on another computer.

you do realize they reccommend like no more than an hour of playing on it at a time right?

Just like how video games recommend you take a 15 minute break every hour?

Yeah, right.
