some people are treating this like another "bedroom!!!!" thing and it's getting on my nerves already
i was sad too but i accepted that i can care less and i didn't use rtb much anyways

sucks its going away

but blockland was doing just fine without it so i dont really think it'll be a problem

we should make badspot scared and quit blockland for about a week, then come back on

Won't be the same without it.
Thats exactly what I was telling my friend Blackwatch on steam earlier today.

It really wont, it was once so easy to get add-ons when you had RTB in game.

This is sad... Why is RTB being shut down in the first place? Links please?

How do you know it's personal reasons.
there's no other reasonable reason for this being shut down

its pretty clear how steam doesn't cover what RTB does in terms of having a general, low-power irc, addons board, and easy-to-access friends list, so "because of steam" can be ruled out.
"because of the community" is dumb; why didn't he shut this down 5 years ago
"because of money" shouldn't be an issue; if ephi could maintain this for 5 years he almost certainly still has the money to maintain it for at least a couple years more, unless he lost his job (which would count as personal reasons). and in the case of money, he would have said so, rather than just say "nope i don't have any plan for this; cya guys"

anyways, definitely really sad this is going, since every time i've come back I've always used RTB to get updated on recent, useful mods and stuff. If ephi would consider continuing to host it with donations, that would be great, even without further development. sure, it may be old and "creaking," but it still works fine.

-snip-

he has plentiful of money - rtb hosting. He's keeping it up just because he's getting so much money.

"because of steam" can be ruled out. RTB was 98% based off of Steam. Now that Steam is becoming part of the root for Blockland, RTB is getting kicked out. So "because of steam" is an important factor here.

Steam also auto-update just fine. It also has a Steam Workshop as you know, other creative people who DON'T have RTB (and never will have now) will create stuff on there.

And Blockland's decline continues

And Blockland's decline continues
Oh shut up you over dramatic moron.

Well, RTB had a good run. Steam never really clicked with me, but the only way to go is forward from here.

You guys want me to try to build a good RTB memorial?
Yeah. Make a good build with a pit where RTB will go. :'(

let's burn some effigies of ephi

or

ephi-gies if you will

...

Its sad I remaped my steam key so that I could use rtb like normal, and I just got used to it.

wait why is RTB going away????????

I wasn't intending to explain much further but there's a bunch of stupid rumors going around so I may as well clarify things.

RTB's always been about furthering my own skills and knowledge and featured prominently on my resume when I applied for my first job (and it's probably why I got it). It got to the point a while ago that RTB no longer did that for me but I continued because I enjoyed the game/community and it provided a lot of useful services that were clearly needed - plus I saw an opportunity to have my work exposed to a much larger userbase via Steam.

However in my opinion the Steam launch was underwhelming, badly co-ordinated and still has a number of non-trivial problems that haven't been resolved a month and a half or so later. Honestly I expected game development to be taken a bit more seriously given the potential for a much wider audience but it's just not materialised and I got bored of putting more effort into the game than the guys who make it. I offered to develop community features and services for free as an official part of Blockland but there wasn't much interest or follow-up on that.

So with my free time running out due to a recent job promotion I'm having to pick what I want to spend it on more carefully and I really can't justify spending any more of it on modding Blockland. I'll continue to play and moderate because it's a great game but I'm done developing.

k here you go guys
