Author Topic: Trig Question.  (Read 1144 times)

Had my math quiz today and this question, for some reason, was hard for me and Im wondering what the answer is.

Using the values, sec x = -9/2 and tan x > 0, find cot x

Simple, the answer is mind explosion.

You should become the Prime Minister of knowledge.

I ended up getting the wrong answer I think

Is the answer 2 / sqrt(77)?

I accidentally put 2 / sqrt(14) --->  ok wtf I didnt put that I ended up getting  2 * sqrt(3) / 1 idk what I did lol

I won't solve it for you, but I will tell you it's between 257 and 258. Just so you know, the tan x > 0 is excess info.

i wouldnt even bother with math just flirt with one of the nerdy guys until he's willing to pass you the answers

It's a trigck questions there is no right answer.

Or buy him games on steam when that doesn't work.

what kind of monster are you

Why cant you solve it for me

gay

but there is a kid in my class who has steam and plays tf2 and stuff

you truly are a slut.

Just for the fun of it I solved it completely in a reverse engineering sense: 1/cos(257.5), adding/subtract decimal numbers and places until it equaled -4.5 exactly. The answer is 257.160411594 (for x).

I don't have time to explain how to work it practically, as I have stuff I need to do, so if someone else can, that'd be great.

Oh and I think that tan x > 0 is there to tell you than tan x is not negative

Sec = 1 / cos = hyp / adj
we need to find 1/tan = cos/sin = (adj/hyp) * (hyp / opp) = adj / opp

answer is 2 / b

use hyp^2 = adj^2 + b^2 and solve for b to get

b = sqrt(hyp2 - adj2)

substitute in variables

b = sqrt((-9)2 - 22)
b = sqrt(77)

answer is 2/sqrt(77)

Yea you know what I did. I multiplied 9*2 omfg. Then I subtracted 4 from 18 and somehow got 12

I've solved it this way because idk I was taught this way at school.

1/cos(x) = -9/2

:. cos(x) = -2/9

x = 102.8

since tan(102.8) < 0, cannot be.

:. Find the next intersection point on cos(x) which is at

180+(180 - 102.8) = 257.2

tan(257.2) = 4.39 (so allowed)

:. 1/tan(x) = cot(x) so 1/tan(257.2) = 2/sqrt(77)

Edit: As far as my calculation goes we both got the same answer so you probably got it right.
