Author Topic: ubuntu installation help on windows 98 pc  (Read 714 times)

So heres the cheese...

I want to install ubuntu on an etower 400i3 pc running windows 98se, 400mhz processor, 32 mb of ram,  and a 4.3 gb hard drive and has no internet connection, nor the means to acquire one. (You prolly havnt seen those kind of specs in forever)

I have installed kernel.Exe and usb 2.0 driver support.

I am really only keeping it around just to see how much I can actually do with it.

so right now I want to install a secondary operating system on it.

I want ubuntu or some other similar OS. I will need to install it without access to the internet and I dont have much experience with driver partitions and booting sequences. So I will need a simple way to install it (like just running an exe or inserting a disc into the pc and watch it do all the work for me)

why
you won't be able to do anything on it

why
you won't be able to do anything on it
you can do more on it than windows 98

98 is better than ubuntu

you won't be able to do anything on it
just for the hell of it. Plus I plan on extensively upgrading the pc in the next few years

not gonna be worth it dude, just build an entirely new PC.

it'll run so painfully slow and be limited by space so much that yes, you won't be able to do anything on it

you can't upgrade something like this.
you'd be building a computer from scratch

I already have a new pc. I wont be using the etower for anything more than just messing around with.

32 mb of ram

The Ubuntu minimum requirement is 512....

well im sure in the end it prolly wont have any of the original internal parts but I reall am onlydoing this because I'm getting bored with it and I want to see how much I can "push" it past its "original" limits.

oh, k. Well I will either have to wait till I have the spare doe to upgrade the ram or I will have to install a different OS.

you shouldn't waste money on it
like, if you had lots of money on your hands then sure but it seems you're empty on cash so why the hell would you want to waste money on it

I dont have any money right now because its hard as forget to get a job in the tiny little town I live in. But I guess it isnt something that i should spend a lot of my time and money on right now. I guess I will just hang on to it till im older and have that computer repair place I want to own when I retire,

Ignore people saying Ubuntu is bad.
It's far better than an old, obsolete version of windows. Literally, all you can really do on 98 is stare at a very pixelated screen and wait for long times for it to load.
