Author Topic: Something about war that bothers me.  (Read 5540 times)

if you thought it was the right thing to do, that would be your defense, not "I was just following orders"
that's how it still works in modern times with things like murder
that isn't bullstuff.

and like ghoststar said, "i was just following orders" does not imply you knew it was wrong.
here are two hypothetical situations

a officer, coming home to be greeted as a war hero, is met with incredible praise. he brushes it off as duty, and that he was just "following orders."

then

the same officer comes to a trial, greeted as a criminal, and leans he is to sentenced for war crimes. he says he was just "following orders."

"i was just following orders" does not imply you knew it was right or wrong. it doesn't imply anything about morality except that "i was supposed to do this regardless if i thought it was wrong or right."

Think if the Germans won, our history books were to say the Americans + friends were evil dogs who wanted to kill the great Reich.
he was asking why night fox thought history wasn't written by the victors

not that

Ok, I am semi confused with this nightfox vs. BLF because my brain is tired.

I see almost nothing wrong with what nightfox is saying, other than this,
that's bullstuff though

and I dont see anything wrong with what everyone else is saying. So why was there a conflict going on prior to the above quote?

he must be writing a fairly lengthy response explaining his side, so we'll just have to wait

because night fox states his opinion that "just following orders" is not an excuse.

Haven't you noticed that the USA was never depicted as the bad guys?

toplel
what a stuff game

All I have to say on the matter is that it's way too easy to say "just don't follow the orders" when you aren't the one being ordered around.

what a stuff game
stuff game

except it's not?
there's a reason why the soviets and united states aren't seen as equally terrible or worse than the national socialists
you're technically right, in general, but the way the phrase is used isn't. it doesn't take long after something happens for everyone to realize the truth of it
like the native americans, and what we did to them. everyone understands that now, despite the fact that we were the "victor"
and as for WWII, the reason we aren't seen to be as bad as them is because we weren't. we had internment camps for the japanese but we didn't kill millions of them
and of course let's just ignore everyone who sees the bad in every single war while it's still going on

you're right, I mean, it's not like I eat or watch tv or talk to my parents or anything else all I do is type responses to people 24/7

I can't really count the usa being "victorious" against the native americans

way too much stuff got sacrificed for it to be called a victory rather than an empty truce

yeah, but we used an atomic weapon against them. twice.

we were in full flex to build more, too

granted, you have the highest postcount on the forum

wasn't a very far off guess

it was pretty bad as a game and a character study though.
all of the events (SPOILERS) such as the

white phosphorous
blowing up the water trucks
killing civilians in general
etc.

were railroaded to you with no choices what so ever, and the most touted one of them all (willy pete mortars) lost any moral impact it had because you didn't know it was going to kill civilians and you didn't have a choice (despite one of your teammates barking in your ear that it was wrong).

can you please resize that image decepticon

also from reading that summary in the OP it made me think of saving private ryan where the german soldier was attacking the bushy eyebrow guy and killed him even though he was spared before by tom hanks
there really is a conflicting set of views about national socialist germany

I see the atomic bombings as more of an attempt to end the war rather than to murder and kill off an entire ethnic minority.

yahtzee said something like that, that it loses the impact of it's moral quandry considerinv you HAVE to do the terrible things. For what it is, though, i think it was an intrresting concept for a game
