let's ban heart disease
how bout we dont ban anything. and instead lets take all the money that would be needed to ban guns, and use it to help stop cancer

imo the risks outweigh the benefits
What about the benefit of surviving a massacre?

I honestly don't see why civilians would need assault rifles. I'm not anti gun, I'm just anti assault rifle.
Do you know what an assult rifle is?

What about the benefit of surviving a massacre?
from what, men with automatic rifles?

is that that one book where the guy can see dead people?

The United States is fairly hopeless in terms of guns. We have the most, more than any other country, nearly one per person. Restricting or loosening gun laws won't do much because there are already billions out in the market. Since "bad guys" have guns, "good guys" need guns, so we pour in more. Eventually, to become safe in this environment, we have to give every single person a gun and train them to be able to fire back in a panicky situation like a school shooting. The whole concept of "more guns = less crime" works, but it slowly has turned this nation into a war zone.

well. isn't that sorta what I said

Oh, and I'd suggest taking guns if it wasn't for the Second Amendment and all the crazy wingnuts willing to shoot at anyone who tries to take them, even if passed legally and with majority's consent. We're doomed.

Only the media tells people that the United States is a war zone. Its so easy to drink it up.

Well, considering how many shootings we've had lately (16 *major* ones in 2012 alone), it's approaching that. And in order to do the type of anti-crime system where we give "good guys" guns to counter the bad guys, we need to train every one to have reaction time enough to shoot back and stop the shooter. If you just hand some average citizen a gun, and someone starts firing an automatic weapon into the room, no matter how much Call of Duty they play, they won't be able to shoot back in time, yet alone accurately.

I too, had to discuss the right to bear arms, for my Law & Justice Honors class... Not gonna lie, controversial topics are like half the reason I took the class lol.

I'm not gonna reguritate facts, here have a powerpoint modified powerpoint that has been edited to remove all names I built SUPPORTING gun rights
IMPORTANT - it's a multimedia presentation, so it's best to view it in powerpoint mode: it's a web-design interface, which is to say you can reach any slide, at any time via the buttons at the top on the navigation panel. Some parts are also interactive. Keep in mind I made this for a class, not for the forums, so some of it may be irrelevant
edit: can't attach the powerpoint, looking for an alternative way to post it
double edit: here's the link to a file hosting site, best I can think of... Like I said, view it in powerpoint mode

Summary of my view:
• banning guns takes them away from LEGAL owners, doesn't do anything to stop a CRIMINAL
• Our global population is 7 BILLION people. Of COURSE some of them are off their rocker and have an itchy trigger finger, this isn't anything new? Not like anyone has ever killed in the past, oh, I dunno, couple thousand years WITHOUT a gun?
• The purpose of the 2nd amendment is so that, in the instance of where our government becomes corrupt and turns against us, we can overthrow it. I'm not gonna talk scenarios because for whatever reason that never seems to work well on these forums, so here's this: Ukraine has strict gun laws. How bloody, violent and useless have those fights been? JUST today has the govt. said "alright we'll talk" after other countries have stepped up and said "yo knock it off"
• gun =/= ultimate killing machine of death and destruction. That will never be a valid argument. The owners are bad, not the gun. Forks don't make you fat, potatoes don't choke you, and the mayo jar didn't get itself stuck on your richard. In the wrong hands, yes, lives are lost, but that goes back to that 7 billion people thing. Not everyone can be 100% in the head.
• police have no responsibility what-so-ever to protect you, it is simply their MORAL responsibility. Further, if a cop is a mile away and you are half a minute from being mugged, don't count on your hard-working tax dollars to save your ass. The best you can hope for is a tissue, a "buck up kid, at least he only stabbed you in the arm..." and a trip to the hospital
• Did I mention the fact that they're already criminals so it's not like they listen to gun law anyways
• It is pretty easy to make a gun. Save, you can't make one out of some pipe cleaner and laundry detergent, but It is possible to make a gun with stuff you can find in an airport, let alone one with quality materials
• What are you gonna do? Knock on every door in America and say "gimme al ur guns!1"? I'd be willing to bet a majority of gun owners would hand their firearms over once provided proper paperwork, but to some people that's like a Ferrari. That you built. With your dad. Who died of cancer a week before finishing it. They won't wanna hand it over.

the point of civillians having guns is so that they can defend themselves from the government, that was the entire point of the right to bear arms
