After finally defeating the Combine and retaking Earth, but facing the death of Alyx Vance and most of his other allies, Dr. Gordon Freeman decides to build a time machine with Dr. Kleiner and teleport through time back to a date a few months before the Black Mesa incident, and work to prevent the resonance cascade from happening. However, realizing the numerous workplace abuses committed and laws broken by Black Mesa in the name of profit, Gordon instead files a lawsuit against Black Mesa and enrolls in the federal Witness Protection Program, who give him a new identity, new name, new home and new history. After several months working as an adjunct professor in nuclear research at the University of New Mexico, the renamed Gordon becomes wracked with PTSD about his experience with the resonance cascade and instead abandons research entirely, and takes on a job as a chemistry teacher at a local, low-performing high school, JP Wynne High School in Albuquerque. Eventually he marries a bookkeeper and has a son with her who is unfortunately afflicted with cerebral palsy, and nearly twenty years after traveling back in time the renamed Gordon acquires lung cancer from exposure to dangerous amounts of radiation while traveling through teleports. In order to finance his treatments and keep his family in good standing with money, he teams up with an old student from JP Wynne to begin manufacturing crystal meth under the name of
