Author Topic: does anyone else have problems recognizing people who changes avatars often?  (Read 2404 times)

HOW DO YOU CHANGE IT? TEACH ME, MASTER!
actually, I changed mine yesterday and it worked fine for me. it was also working on my phone, and one of my friends said it was working for him when I asked, and later another one told me it was working for him too. so I got the impression that it actually worked, in general
and later that same day (or was it today?) I gave that second friend a little advice about changing his avatar and it worked. I'm pretty certain we both just got lucky though

Apparantly it's some stupid thing by the dev team of SMF where images created by various image editing programs, including Photoshop are read as dangerous and therefore not uploaded, despite being perfectly safe. Their stupid suggestion is to use other programs instead of the massively popular and successful ones just because their program has a problem with it.

The dev team don't seem to give a stuff solely because they're releasing an entirely new SMF version, which is the cause of the problem since they pinched experimental code from that and used it to update these older versions without testing what it does.
I've honestly no idea which programs work better than others, or why some files get through and others.
From what I read the problem doesn't have a perfect solution.
Here's the link, by the way: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=513488.0

I can't quite recall if Paint.net has one, but if it has an option for "Saving for Web" then try using that.

I think until SMF Devs get to work there's not much I can suggest other than to try a bunch of things.
I hope it does work out though.

I can't say for sure if this is a guarantee, but try re-saving your images with different image-editing programs and with "Save for Web" functions.
The SMF team are a bunch of richards though and seemingly can't be bothered to fix this issue for the time being.

that isn't always the problem but it's definitely worth a shot if you're having trouble
like, I was having tons of problems uploading my avatar(s) for valentine's day a few weeks ago, and among the ones I was having issues with, was a regular .png from paint.net
when I uploaded this one, it worked, but it was still a regular .png from paint.net

I recall getting an error about the size of the file, like the one they mention in that thread, but I didn't get any error at all this time

Saved it as a bitmap. Trying now.

No problem! Just make sure that's an avatar you're comfortable with. No guarantee that method will work again.

Yeah, I identify people by their avatars a lot.
If the avatar is poorly drawn or looks bad I assume the person is an idiot.
hey that's my "art style"

Yeah, pretty much.

Or if they just have no avatar.

I remember when I was allowed to have an avatar..

Anyway, I browse solely by avatar. If someone doesn't have an avatar, I'll either ignore them completely or try to identify them by their tone of voice. If their comment is particularly evocative I'll read the name so I know who I'm addressing, but the avatar and tone catches 95% of posts.

I uploaded mine as a png and it worked fine, just have to be patient, doesn't work immediately.

I only occasionally make edits of my avatar. I've had this avatar since I joined 5 years ago lol.

I have trouble when people change avatar or have the same avatar, but I generally read names too.

/explain

It's kinda hard for people to change avatars because the avatar system is so forgeted right now, so hardly anyone is changing their avatar.
