Keep in mind they'll have to tweak both lasers and plasmas when they add different types of weapons. Such as rail cannons, or whatever they plan to release after that.

only vanity items (most of them are cool like vapor trails) uses exclusive GC. the rest is free. I'm almost done with the tech tree but I don't want to expend research points in wheels cus I love flying.

It's Pay4Convenience, and then there are cosmetic items (just like Fab said). The ratio for Blocks:GC is however very high so I would recommend against it anyway.
