I downloaded the Hi-Blast yesterday, so I spawned it. Then I equipped, but there was something weird.
There was some sort of line and a hand that is like 2 feet away from the player. Wtf.
It's an artifact of the exporter. I explained this earlier. It'll fix itself once the animations are done. It never happened previously because the old version of the Torque exporter required that you make the shape hierarchy manually, while the new one does it automatically.

You should keep the animation for 1st person, and add a 3rd model with no hands and brick building animation
That won't work for what I have in mind for this weapon, plus I don't exactly like the idea myself. Perhaps I'll experiment with it on later weapons, but I wouldn't count on it. I personally think the alternative reloading animations (tier-tac style) look lazy and boring, and I don't understand why people think they look silly in 3rd person. I'm not rejecting their opinions, I just don't see it.
If I could add custom animations to the default player model I'd do that, but obviously I'd need to have the source file for the default player including all default sequences. From there I'd need to add customized animations for every weapon, which would cost not only a stuffload of effort but also another datablock or two per weapon. There is also potential for problems with using non-default playertypes.
So unless Badspot is going to give us a complete .blend file of the minifig in the foreseeable future, my animations are going to stay the same as they always have.
