Author Topic: The Firefly/Serenity Megathread, SPACE COWBOYS!  (Read 2154 times)

welp, this is it. The Firefly megathread.
incase you dont know what Firefly is... google it you lazy forget.
Quote
Firefly is an American space western drama television series
The show explores the lives of a group of people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In this future, the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures.

yup thats the crew right up there.

"Captain Malcolm Reynolds" is the main character in the show. He is the captain of the ship "Serenity" and he is really funny. He always knows whats best for his crew and his wallet, and is willing to put his life on the line for both of those.

"River Tam" is... well... weird.  She is the sycotic but extremely intelligent little sister of "Simon Tam"
she tends to be really vague and mysterious with the way she communicate s with the rest of the crew, but is non the less a vital asset. In her earlier childhood. She was taken by the government and put through a lot of wierd and strange experiments which eventually lead to her strange mental behavior and psychic wierd mind reading kinda thingy abilities.  She is also my favorite character.

"Inara Serra" is the prostitute, whore, "Companion"
she basicaly sleeps with guys, or in some cases, other girls, for money. She has a contract with "Mal" that lets her run her business on his ship. "Mal" also had a relationship with her earlier in their past. He obviously still has feelings for her but he doesnt want anyone, or even himself to know.

"Kaylee Frye" Is the lovable ship's mechanic. She's funny, cute, smart, and the only person alive who knows how to keep the ships engine running, oh and she loves strawberries. "Kaylee" and "Simon" have a little bit of an attraction towards eachother throught the entire season. I cant quit remember how the season ended but im pretty sure they almost went on a date. I will have to say that "Kaylee" is my second favorite character.

"Jayne Cobb" is probably the least intelligent crew member. He's not stupid, but he's definitely not the smartest person. His job on the ship is "Public relations". Although "Jayne" and "Mal" dont get along all the time, they are definitely great partners. "Jayne" likes to solve problems using force and muscle and guns, instead of strategy.

"Hoban Washburne" is the pilot of the ship "Serenity"
He is smart and extremely skilled at piloting.  He is married to "Zoe" and is good friends with "Mal"

"Zoe Washburne" is the... well... um... she just kinda hangs around and helps out with defending everyone. Her friendship with "Mal" goes all the way back to the Civil war with the government and the revolution.  They were battle buddies during the war, and remaine battle buddies to this day.

"Simon Tam" purchased his ticket for a ride on "Serenity" with the intention of smuggling his sister "River" across space to a safe place to hide from the government.  But after being exposed by the captain "Mal" he has become an addition to the crew as the ship's Doctor. He is a very intelligent man with a few medical degrees and an attraction to "Kaylee" the ship's mechanic.

"Shepherd Book" Purchased a ticket for a ride on "Serenity" Purley out of the spirit of adventure. He is a very religious man who believes in some form of Christianity I think. He has also basically become a permanent resident aboard "Serenity"
He likes reading his bible, saving peoples lives, and has no problem with shooting people in their knee caps.

So go ahead and discuss Firefly!

oh and they also made a movie called "Serenity"

took me three loving hours to make that OP on my phone

If you haven't seen Firefly or Serenity, then i suggest you go and watch them cos they are really good.

I couldn't get into it when I tried recently.

Everything is just sandy cowboy stuff. Where's the sci-fi?

The characters also all constantly got on my nerves.

It's pretty obvious.. How far into it did you get? 5 minutes? It starts out (the pilot) on a desert planet right? A spaceship turns up pretty soon.

There are a few characters I didn't like, but for the most part I liked them all.

I watched 3 episodes, and have seen some chunk of the movie.

I don't mean that there's no sci-fi in it, but that everything is cowboy themed and deserty. Every planet they go on.
And everyone uses six-shooters and knives.
I'm sure that's appealing to some, but I don't personally like it, since I don't find it believable that a civilisation would get to having space-faring starships of various sizes, yet a cattleman revolver is still everyone's prime choice in weaponry.

well if you notice. a lot of the upperclass people in the show use lazer type weapons and advanced guns. like Inara has this little laser pistol thing i think. and all the Alliance dudes have futuristic assault rifles. i think the reason why a lot of the people in the show have older guns is cos they are dirt broke. they dont have any money to buy fancy weapons and the show takes place on the outscerts of their solar system or something. so it stands to reason that the further away a planet is from the "Center" the less wealth they will have. so most of them have to live like the cowboys did. dirty, nearly lawless, poverty stricken, a lot of agricultural demand. also the whole desert planets thing might be because they lacked the money to terraform the planets into green and vegetation abundant. they might have only been able to afford to just give the planet an oxygen rich atmosphere.

but i understand, the cowboy gene just doesnt work for some people.

This is actually extremely explainable. As Ghoststar said, the further away from the planet you are, the more poor you are.

In terms of earth, most cities are the center of wealth, AKA New York City/Los Angeles. These places usually have modern weapons and technology. However, as you go further out to the suburbs and rural areas, these areas are usually more poor and have to save money up for modern technology, which has already progressed by the time they purchase it. Then you can go out into the wilds of Africa or Asia/South America, and find the sparse areas of population, ruled by tribes because the governments realize it's too dangerous to try and control these areas. They have black market weapons, usually being from the 1960's back.

Basically: Further you go, less money/technology a place has.

exactly

Well, I suppose that makes a lot more sense now.

I'm still not keen on that theme and style, since I like my sci-fi to have lots of futuristic techy stuff, but I can respect the design choice behind it. Thanks for explaining it you two.

I am tired of hearing:
"Hey we were thinking about rebooting this show."
*never happens, mentions it again next year*
either revive or it leave it in the grave, stop living off the hype

god I wish they would just revive it already. But I think it should be pre Serenity. Cos you know what happens at the end of that movie. It just wouldnt be the same without them in the show.

oh my
my math teacher used to call me space cowboy because i just tuned out in class

i recently watched all of firefly, it was pretty good
i should watch serenity again sometime, i only saw it when i was kinda young so i don't remember much of it at all

I watched serenity before the tv show. I was 9 and the reavers scared the living stuff out of me for days. That video log on "Miranda" or whatever the planets name was, kept me awake at night for weeks.
