There were a few Japanese pilot type space games for the ps3 I remember. They were fun as hell but so under the radar I wish I could remember the title.

Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2 are technically open word and are fantasy. There are no quests however, and the story isn't thrust in to your face. Has multiplayer too.

it's not about space, but the ace combat games are good japenese pilot games

It's open world exploration that promotes finding your own path through the world, but there are still some major events that you need to complete to further the story

they're really cool and some of them (read: all of them) are tragic.

if you're into anime at all I'd look into Persona 3, it's on the play store. Really good game.
