Author Topic: HammerHost dedicated hosting service: Transferring to new system  (Read 4775 times)

I have some good news:

HammerHost will be getting business internet, and will be home-hosted!
This means we will be able to get a machine with much more power than the current VPS.
Below is a comparison of the CPU power of different CPU's which were used for hosting services.
The benchmark was created by taking the same Blockland folder full of files, and compressing it with 7-zip:

As you can see here, HammerHost is on par with CBMhost. More importantly, however, the new computer system's CPU has 277% as much single-core power, and 433% as much multi-core poweras the old VPS. What this means is that the new system has more than 2.5 times as much single-core power as the old VPS, and more than 4 times as much overall power as the old VPS.

The new system will use an AMD FX-6300 hexa-core CPU, overclocked to 4.2 GHz, or +20%. The computer will also have 12 GB of DDR3 RAM. The network's speeds will be 25 / 25 Mbps. Speedtest results will come later.

The reason I chose to home-host the Blockland servers instead of using a remote, dedicated server in a datacenter is simple:
Price.
I can get as much CPU performance as a $125 server hosted by Server mania, by purchasing business-grade Internet for $80. The ISP is Verizon FiOS, which uses fiber-optic cables all the way up to the house, so pings will not be too much higher than a datacenter. In the FiOS business terms of service, they let you host as many servers as you want. The network is also very reliable; after 2 years of having this ISP, the Internet connection never experienced a single problem, other than power outages.

Moreover, I can upgrade the computer at any time. I own the system, so getting more RAM is as easy as ordering it from Amazon with bitcoins. This means upgrade cost is extremely low, and I can increase HammerHost's Blockland capacity both quickly and cheaply.

However, there is just one problem:
I need to know if the hosting service should be free or premium.
I am going to leave this decision up to the community.

make a poll lol nevermind it loaded up.

nice. BTW sorry I wasn't able to beta test right now, schools a bitch :(

Have both but Premium has more features.
Sounds good to me.

Just do free, but premium needs money. and they want to steal your money
Do anything, but do premium if you need extra thingies.

I think it should be premium only.

Pretty cool
do free and premium??

How will you handle many clients? Are you going to stick their servers on the same home machine?

Yes. It'll have 12 GB of RAM, so the system can fit 30-34 Blockland servers.

That seems okay, have you tried stress testing 1 server while the other 33 are running?

I only have 6 clients right now.
The new machine was not set up yet, and will be in 5 days.

Premium and free (free having basic options) would be the best option. Good luck! ;D

EDIT: God damnit accidentally chose premium only in the poll ;(

I am going to order the RAM tomorrow.

25/25 seems low, especially if your family are using the connection simultaneously. Good luck!

The rest of the computers / electronic devices will be downloading more than uploading.
I and Pacnet were able to run a hosting service with 10 active Blockland servers from as low as a 5 Mbps upload speed.

What do you tell your clients when the connection is forgeted cos momma-porkeditor wants to upload the family photos to Flickr?
