Author Topic: I'm trying to become a computer technician/PC fix help - blogland  (Read 1457 times)

So recently, I've been making a large USB drive with a Multiboot, and seperate folders for games, virus cleaners, etc.

And then, it hit me: With all these tools - why don't I start being a local computer technician?

This is actually pretty easy for me, since my father has a lot of friends who really don't know how to use computers. I got 50 bucks just for fixing one.

I have this broken PC I'm currently fixing, first it wouldn't boot and just had a long beep, but all I had to do was reinsert the RAM. Upon trying to boot, I get DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

How do I fix that? I'm currently burning Hiren's Boot CD onto a CD right now, so I can see if I can recover it, and I also have a bootable USB with some rescue discs and other software.

If not, should I just install a Linux distribution onto it? And if so, which? I have elementary, xubuntu, and lubuntu.

The PC is a HP Pavillion (don't know which model), with Windows Vista support and a Intel Pentium. That's all I know.

If none of those distros will work, what should I use?

Either way, let me know what you think about the technician job, and also I'd appreciate some help with the PC.

ummm if its saying disk boot failure that means its trying to boot from a disc

try changing the boot priority

...but there's no disk in the drive or usb plugged in

always contemplated doing this as a career,
Tokerovin does it as a profession, he works full time in a company which dispatches technicians when school's computers break.

The most common ways I fix computers:
1. Reboot
2. Check google
Sounds like a good line of work to go into, I may even conceder doing it myself if my current job as a college theatre technician goes down the toilet.

Sorry I couldn't be much help on the problem.

Is there a HDD? What OS did the owner say it had? Is the HDD dead or alive? I've had Disk Boot Failures many times. Especially with dead HDDs.

clearly, that's why it's telling you to put in a disk

all the kids at my school ask me for help when their computers break down
i usually run malwarebytes or google the problem and fix it
they dont even know what i did

There is a HDD, although I can't tell if it's alive. When I used Hiren's it didn't show it. If it isn't dead, like I said, I'm planning to install a Linux distro for the time being.

Do you hear any unnatural noises like a grinding noise or a winding-up or high-pitched sounds or even a simple click coming out of the HDDs? Did the owner ever drop the computer/drive or is it a desktop? What kind of a drive is it? The most common now a days are IDE (becoming less common) and SATA.

Do you feel movement in it? Try to not rely on bullstuff programs.

DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.
This is where I would take a Windows CD or another hard drive with Windows installed on it, and replace the current drive. If it works, it probably means that either the drive is dead or something is wrong with the operating system.

i don't hear any odd noises, and the owner really didn't tell us anything, just gave it to us. we were going to use it for parts, but now I'm working on fixing it.

If it's for parts, format the HDD and sell it. :cookieMonster:
