"i have a computer problem i don't know how to fix"
"i should be a computer technician"

i mainy work on viruses and programs
i'm still learning more from my dad

also, upon trying to install elementary OS, the 4.4 GB recommendation said it wasn't there
sooooo the HDD's dead

technicians don't know everything
and besides he's just considering taking it up
i know but it's pretty silly to mix both of these things into one

What a tech should know as basics:
What each computer part is.
How to detect dead parts
How to fix OS-related issues
How to fix boot related issues
How to change parts incase they're dead.
What types of different connections there are
Be able to detect improper connections
Be able to fix the problem OP mentioned.

Try to obtain a copy of MS-DOS. Download NTFS drivers for it from the web, put it in a USB flashdrive (16GB MAX!) and see if it's there or not. Or you could check in the BIOS if the HDD is dead or not.

i'm technically a certified computer technician and i'm still out of a job.

all because i'm still in high school...

have you considered joining the TomTheGeek Squad?

have you considered joining the TomTheGeek Squad?

they don't even care if you're certified or not.

they take anyone who knows how to use a computer, really.

plus, the local one isn't hiring.

listen I did this for free
I was happy I got money at all

quickedit: i'm also wiping my old laptop's HDD darik's boot and nuke 2.2.7

and let me say: IT TAKES TOO LONG
I'm being patient here, but I don't think it would have taken this long
it's at 00.77%, runtime 57:15 minutes, remaining (on it's estimate), 122 HOURS, 31 MINUTES.

why?!

is it because I'm using a USB? if that's the case, I would have switched to a CD

dude, nuking drives isn't like quickly formating something.

you're writing 0's to the entire drive and that's bottlenecked by the speed of the hard drive itself.

it took me a while day to nuke one of my drives before so it's nothing really new.

Forgot.

BTW, USB is faster than CD. Time remaining depends on your HDD's speed, latency and capacity. And 112 hours is aprox. 5.08 days.

really? I thought nuking was the same as formatting, guess not
is there any other way to quickly get everything off

Formatting rewrites the file format on the disk, removing the pointers from the system BUT the file data is STILL there. Nuking, as Tom said, writes 0's to the entire drive meaning EVERYTHING is lost. The quickest way is using a magnet. Although it is the least recommended way as you can break the drive.

well you gotta start what you finished, or else that HD will be corrupted.
