Most people I've met who actually use deodorant use it as an excuse to not shower. Trust me, showering and not using deodorant is a lot better than using deodorant and not showering. Also, if you think that someone who showers regularly is disgusting, you're doing showers wrong.

I never use deodorant alone because it doesn't tackle the problem.

The problem is that I smell. I smell because I get sweaty.
Masking the smell with deodorant doesn't solve that.

So instead I use Antiperspirants (which may or may not also be deodorising) to prevent sweating, hence prevent smelling.

Deodorants alone are fine if you happen to be a bit smelly at the time, but I'd rather be proactive in not smelling rather than reactive.
And if I am rather smelly and need deodorants I probably would benefit just as much by going for a shower.
