Author Topic: The Moon spontaneously combusted  (Read 2497 times)

If the moon combusted ir just broke like glass as indicated in the picture, i would do nothing at all because there is nothing to worry about.

if anything we'll get a badass ring system over time, and earths orbit wont really deviate much since the barycentre of the Earth-Luna centre would still be within the planet

I dont think earth would last long if the moon blew up

This may be wrong, but if the moon exploded, would the debris even hit the earth? It'd all still be in orbit, unless the explosion was strong enough to push the debris into our atmosphere.

Also combustion means to be on fire, not to explode. The moon can't combust because it doesn't have oxygen.

the orbit around the sun is not at all the biggest problem. the real problems are the effect the moon's gravity has on our planet

it doesn't have to be strong. stuff in space just floats onwards unless there's some force acting on it, such as for example the earth's gravity

Maybe microparticles and stuff will be flung fastly enough to be put on escape or more atmospheric orbits, but then all we'd see is a cool light show a few days after a kaboom.

Yes a nice ring

Just like saturns. Which includes orbital bombardments because the rings don't just STAY there you know. If the moon exploded it would be catastrophic and we'd all more than likely die.

We build a giant trampoline over the world so that the moon rocks bounce off, after escaping the most immediate danger we all indulge in rampant orgies until we die off.

Yeah im pretty sure we would all die with no chance of survival

What I'm saying is even if a force on some debris pointed directly towards earth, the debris' existing velocity would prevent it from ever hitting the earth I think.

The second side is an after picture. The red is the orbit of the debris.

I'm not really an expert on physics though. But maybe what we'd have to worry about more would be the moon not being there.

Inform Aperture Laboratories that moonrock is not going to be retrieved very easily anymore.

harvest moon rocks and start an exchange called mooncoins

For this to even be a thing that happens there would need to be something to fuel the fire; furthermore any debris that would "fall" from the moon would most likely burn up in our atmosphere, in fact it's even more likely that if the moon were to break apart it would simply create very many small moons.

If all of the Helium3 within the moon were to combust in some freaky fireball resulting, somehow, in the moon exploding: there would be a considerable danger for gigantic chunks of the moon hurtling towards the Earth, the lack of a moon would cause our tides to be decided by the Sun (which would only be 40% as pronounced), nights would be EXTREMELY dark, the lack of a gravitational pull from the moon would speed up the rotation of the Earth considerable (resulting in a day to only last 6-8 hours), and an assortment of other terrible things.

Not to mention that animals reliant on the moon would be screwed over
