Author Topic: My friend won't port-forward for a laughable reason.  (Read 1208 times)

Some people may say "blogland forums", but my friend won't host a Minecraft server without Hamachi because he thinks port-forwarding opens him up to "ip hackers in general". We (my friends) want him to host because hes the only one that has the internet to do so, but Hamachi is a pain in the ass to get. Do any of you computer NERDS know what to tell him to convince him that he's stupid? I told him that nobody hacks port-forwarded IPs, and he said "that is a straight up lie". Maybe it is, but for his purposes...

just tell him about how amazing I am

You could just play on mine :cookieMonster: :cookieMonster:

I think it actually does?? like port-forwarding disables what would otherwise block incoming stuff from that port, right?

Opening a port is indeed a way open to hackers BUT that is what a firewall is for. Forewall can causes problems to several IP's and port that firewall blocks and clients will be unable to connect tthen so be sure to leave the port "25565" unblocked then. But if a hacker chooses a target what will the chances be its his pc. I have my port "28000" open for years (I never disable it) and it causes me no problem. Be sure his OS is higher then win XP because bill ain't updating that one anymore. Vista, 7 and 8 are still up-to-date.

but what can you do with an open port
talk to whatever socket is listening on it

that's it

yeah but
my point is just that it does open it up to people
it's still ridiculous to not forward it bc of that

Also, how is Hamachi a pain in the ass to get? You download it, it works.

Why would anyone want to forget with his router anyway? He's being way too paranoid.

he can just unforward those ports after he's done hosting if he's so paranoid.

also if he's not a handicap on the internet he's not gonna attract any hackers' attention

hamachi's not that much of a problem?
it actually really convenient
