Rez is a rail shooter music (not RHYTHM) game, that was released on PS2, Dreamcast, and Xbox 360. It has a pretty great storyline, along with a followup/spiritual sequel called Child of Eden. The game was great, although I felt it would be pretty amazing if you could use your own music with the game. Which wasn't possible on Dreamcast or PS2, but possible on the Xbox 360. It was never done, though. Then I thought: why not make it now?
The simulation wouldn't be "plop your music in and get playing". You have to make the enemies, samples, textures, stage layout, etc. It seems like a stretch just to make it, but it's worth it in the end. It'd be similar to Danmakufu, but with a bit more coding and work.
Enemies can be based off of ones from the game, and you can customize their shots, the way they look, etc. You can use your own models as well. Sounds have to be made for shots, or you can use the ones available.
The level layout would be in sequences. In the game, the stage has several parts of areas, all leading up to the boss.
It would be like:
1st Section: 0%
2nd Section: 10%
3rd Section: 20%
And so on and so forth.
However, adding more sections can change the percentage. It could start jumping from 10, to a smaller amount each time.
Music files would be supported by various formats, m4a, ogg, mp3, and others.
Events can be added into your level, like text boxes on transitions (Area 5 is related to this), effects, powerups from deaths of certain enemies, and other events used in the game.
I probably can't do this since I have 0 experience with making games, but what do you guys think? Would this be a good idea?
