for some reason wild pokemon can prevent you from running away, and some of them do it at least 3 times (often following up with an attack) before I'm allowed to leave.

Those are in the regular games.

If the enemy has shadow tag as an ability: You cannot escape unless your active pokemon also has shadow tag.
If the enemy has arena trap as an ability: You cannot escape unless your active pokemon is Flying type/levitating through Levitate ability/Magnet rise.
If the enemy has used Mean Look or Spider Web, you cannot escape.
