Author Topic: What makes a game fun?  (Read 1807 times)

I don't mean as in gimmicks or specific themes, but in general what makes a game playable?  What is a game for, even?

replayability, fitting graphics, low amount of glitches

Controls. Viewability (FOV in shooters, screen space in 2D games, non-obtrusive HUD elements, etc). No bullstuff interruptions.

love scenes

it needs to be something enjoayble and make you think that you're in control, either by moving a character or selecting choices

Replayability
Huge customization
Huge worlds
great storyline and physics
and more

It varies heavily from person to person. What some people may find valuable, others may find obnoxious.

What is a game for, even?
Some aim to tell a story (RPGs and a lot of MMS games), some are just trying to give the player a good time (Mario, X-COM), others are to show off fancy new technologies the industry may be able to put to good use (Shattered Horizon, recent Battlefield games).

Ultimately they should be fun, or failing that, interesting and thought provoking. Though as I said, what is "fun" or "interesting" depends on the person.

but in general what makes a game playable?
Something or someone to interpret it. Exs:
Tag - Two or more players know the rules and interpret the game.
Blockland - A computer interprets the game while the user tells the computer what to do.

What is a game for, even?
Same as why movies are made. Entertainment.
