Author Topic: why do graphics matter WHY  (Read 1796 times)

If you don't know someone and they start badmouthing you the best right of passage is to continue with your own conversation.

And to answer your question, Video games are a form of visual entertainment. To both the well versed and the newcomer gamer, the art style has to be enticing. If I made all the sprites of my game a picture of a white vase then it wouldn't be as intriguing as a game with well-designed sprites. However there is certainly a balance that developers normally understand, of course in a perfect world it would be fantastic to have a game with all the bells and whistles possible, but it comes down to going with one extreme or the other. Some games live off their fantastic visuals while others for their gameplay. Some people kick up the ol' gauntlet or whatever and play because its gameplay is fantastic, while others play games such as uhhh
The unfinished swan or fez because of it visuals

really it depends on the game so both of you are wrong and right

I feel like an important part to a good game is aesthetic. That doesn't mean it has to be super realistic or whatever.

a realistic game where you run in circles
i think that's called a tech demonstration

nobody likes playing ugly games
but imo it doesn't necessarily have to be like, high-resolution textures and all
it just needs to look good, whatever direction it takes

for example, Sword and Sorcery is a 2D game made from pixel art, but look at it

i think that's called a tech demonstration
I was using it as a example

I do tend to lean on graphics but if a game is fun it's fun, no matter how many cool triple effect explosion vsyncs it throws at me

Style is infinitely better than highres bloom surface reflecting wall
One of my favorite games, dishonored is styled the forget up and I love it so

yes this

I loved the art style in dishonored

They don't. Look at Blockland for example!

Just kidding. But seriously, gameplay > graphics.

Graphics do matter to me.
I mean hd bump mapped normalized dog hair textures don't make up for stuff gameplay, but except for the rare cases where the graphics 'style' actually works most games could be improved by improving their graphics

i think when it comes to graphics, other than design i'd have to say uhh
textures make a game nice right? i mean uhhh there's that one horror game that used to be one the ds, but (i think this is one of the only games to do this) when it was ported to PC they updated all the textures but not exactly the models
but iunno i'm just a kid!
