Author Topic: Chromebook or something similar for under $150?  (Read 2105 times)

I wouldnt suggest chromebooks. First of all, google isnt really trustable when it comes to your personal information (they probably spy on you when you use the computer, or im just paranoid). Also, if you want to play blockland and other pc games your playing experience will be very negative.

that is a pretty paranoid thing to say, for the record.

AFAIK, Chromebooks are over $150. There is, however, a Chrome OS desktop that's is just $180. Cheapest Chrome OS device, I think.

I have been thinking about getting a ChromeBook too just for school-related stuff. Could it run Word, and do things like documents, simple note-taking, and run Excel and PowerPoint? And perhaps Blockland?

hes a very simple person when it comes to computers. he prolly doesn't even know the difference between a Mac and a PC. he wants a computer to play minecraft and surf youtube to watch pewdiepie.
The Pi will work perfectly, since it has both things.

All of Google's products, other than the Nexus, are completely useless. I unfortunately can't think of anything under $150.

its a bit creepy, not that bad is when you realize that all the "spying" is automated and for ad relevance
3rd parties dont see that data anyway, theyre just paying for "people who like baseball" or something
people dont realize google is made and developed by the SAME PEOPLE who use google on a daily basis

if he's looking to play minecraft or games dont get a chromebook
honestly you arent gonna get any decent tech related stuff for only $150

Depending on your current computer setup, you may just want to upgrade. (More RAM if you only have a couple gigs or maybe even a lower-mid range graphics card)

how are they useless?
Because odds are you already have something that can do everything a Google product offers. As an example, the Chromecast can do everything a modern day Blu Ray player or video game console can do but less. you can make the argument that some people can't afford anything higher than $100, but I call bullstuff on that if you can afford to pay for internet and a streaming service, let alone a computer or tablet that supports it.

um.......?????????????????????????
if you can afford to pay for internet service and chromecast (a one-time payment of $35), how does that mean you can afford to blow an extra $150?

Streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, and a computer, phone, or tablet that supports wireless internet.

ok........ ......      .

tell me how being able to afford the things you have ever means you can afford something else, in addition to those things

you could use the money you initially put aside for the first things to pay for the other things instead?
