Help with fighting Lavos in Chrono Trigger

I'm currently using New Game + on Chrono Trigger, and my party, Crono, Magus and Frog are are level ~40. However, I cannot stop getting killed by the 2nd phase of Lavos' first attack, Laser Beams/Doors of Doom open. It instantly kills everyone in my party. So what am I doing wrong? People have beaten this boss way under level 40 and the equipment I have isn't that bad. Where should I go to get better equipment?

Sorry I'm super rusty on Chrono Trigger, but if I can recall I would've used Robo? Bahh just hold on for like a month when I replay it with my friend ;-;
