Author Topic: Epøst's Space Arena DM  (Read 8574 times)

This is a little thing SuperCrazyWacko and I have been working on the past couple of days, and I want to try out a beta test.

I've put a few screenshots down below.

Anyhow, the floor and all of the little red/green/orange platforms give you an upward boost. You spawn in a typical weapon selection area, and you also get temporary jetting. There's a grapple rope included as well.

Tthat sun looks terrabad imo.

This beta test will be intended to see what kind of kinks need to be fixed.

You WILL fix what he's pointing out, right?
It frustrates me when people give constructive criticism on a build and the OP pulls the "it's not done!" card and then doesn't even indicate whether or not he will fix the problem. Sorry if I seem angry, but the way you worded that seemed somewhat dismissive of what he was pointing out.

I like the idea you're going for here. Looks like a souped-up gymnastic platform TDM.

However, I would recommend you work more on developing more detailed platforms. Right now they look pretty bland. Try using some ramp and wedge bricks, to give it a more jagged but believable appearance.
I realize the difficulty in creating spherical objects in a lego-based game, but there are better ways to go about making a sphere-shaped sun. That sun right now looks like someone dumped napalm on Jabba the Hutt.

I mean, for one, the way something looks is subjective. I dunno if it's really worth it to fix that. I'd rather fix stuff that makes the gameplay bad.

Thanks to everyone who attended the beta test; it was short, about an hour, but fun.

I agree, it is always a good idea to tweak the gameplay. However, looks are a big part if a gamemode. I would rather play in a nice, clean looking arena than a badly done one.

Subjectivity and opinion is not the issue here. Your arena has a very low level of detail. This is a thing that makes the gameplay bad, because the map looks less appealing to play on when all the platforms are boxy brown cubes.

If you want to "fix the gameplay", a good place to start is putting more effort into the build. And while I realize we all have different skill levels at building on this game, I believe most people could easily make what you've done so far in 30 minutes or less. Making your build stand out and have its own unique look is one thing that will make people remember your server and want to play on it again.

If you want to make your server better, do this:
  • Get rid of that unappealing force-field of glow fx cubes around your build. It looks cheap and unappealing. If you want to contain the players within the build, you can make it more interesting by having the "walls" glow only when touched, and bounce the player off them, while playing a sound effect to the client.
  • Get rid of those ugly brown square rocks and build at least a dozen new types of unique platforms to duplicate inside the build later. Here are some ideas for platforms:
    • Space debris A
    • Space debris B
    • Comets with cold ice fog
    • Asteroid type A - disfigured oval shape
    • Asteroid type B - flatted and smashed round shape
  • Make and event some power-up items and pickups for players to use. These will help encourage player-to-player competition to reach the items in order to power themselves up. Here are some examples:
    • A "temporary jetpack" that temporarily changes the player's datablock to the standard jet playertype.
    • Health pickups
    • Ammo pickups (only if you are using weapons with ammo mods)
    • Extra types of guns to use

I agree that the platforms need some variety.

Right, it was a little experiment. We do need to do a lot more in the regards of variation; that is a part where I think we failed tremendously. XD

I agree, it is always a good idea to tweak the gameplay. However, looks are a big part if a gamemode. I would rather play in a nice, clean looking arena than a badly done one.

Good point...

Interesting idea.  The build concept could use work though. Nice job.

It's a great idea, but the map is poorly executed.. They're not even spheres. They're like weird lemons.

There's not really a way to make really good spheres that are actually detailed... lol.

....actually their not really round, they're more like 3d ovals XD
also, it was made in 2 days <3 and we love the suggestions coming our way so KEEP EM COMIN :D

But don't be rude, if you find something that needs fixing tell us how, not just "ITS BAD"
For example:

We thank you for your opinion but tell us how we can fix it because we know its bad :I or how it is bad

This is more appreciated. Thank you Candy Apple!

Be nice about your comments or we will ignore you until you post it nicely :/
