Project M is just a mod for Brawl, meaning there is no online capabilities as of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection's shutdown.
In early 2014, Nintendo pushed a patch for the Wii Menu on Wii U, meaning you can't install the Homebrew Channel, resulting in no Project M.

I thought project m doesn't require homebrew of any kind. Just load it on an SD card and launch it from the level editor, right?

Unless you're talking about online functions.

I personally launch mine from the Homebrew Channel using USB Loader GX, I've never done it any other way.

I completely forgot about the level editor exploits, that's all. I don't play Brawl too often and only really needed it to mod my Wii.
