Chores are the best way you can teach your children about the principles of earning, saving and spending money. Doing so does not negate the idea that they should listen to you, or authority in general.

It actually lowers your authority. Unless you have something to give them, they won't do it. My parents make me do chores all the time without giving me stuff but when I acomplish something special for me, them, my sister, my brother or any random starfish in general, they give me a reward.

my parents make a very small amount of money but still manage to give me an opportunity to learn how to manage money and accounts
