Author Topic: Google's new attempt at stopping "loveism" activities. This time its code.  (Read 9252 times)

How are you supposed to create interest in programming by presenting it as something it's completely not? There's definitely ways to teach basic programming in an easy and productive manner to younger groups, and that would actually raise interest by giving kids the ability to improve their skills. How is this supposed to raise awareness when it gives an inaccurate and sort of fraudulent impression of what computer programming is?

isn't that what video game publishers do?

Do you mean 'movie hacking'? If so, that's generally just used as a plot device and movies aren't actually trying to pass it off as real programming/hacking/whatever.

The website offers close-ended projects that require no intuition at all. Even Scratch with is a drag and drop programming language designed to be taught to young kids allows you to create your own projects that require logical thinking and problem solving. The google programming thing can be done by an ape, it's a drag and drop programming language with one choice.

uh
no
I mean they advertise the game as something it's not
and it works

but I don't even really see what you mean? they're showing off a lot of things that come from code. I don't get the issue

We started Made with Code because even though increasingly more aspects in our lives are powered by technology, women aren’t represented in the companies, labs, research, creative arts, design, organizations, and boardrooms that make technology happen.

The issue is that it's not gonna help make women any less underrepresented in STEM fields by misinforming young people about what programming actually is.

Call of duty is described as a video game where you shoot people, is it not?

Blockland is advertised as "Legos but on the internet" is this false?

As you said
I don't even really see what you mean

(Which by the way is not a question so why is there a question mark by that statement?)

but they aren't misinforming anyone

but they aren't misinforming anyone
Yes they are. The 'programming projects' on the website do not resemble any actual programming language. It's not even a primer for programming languages because it requires no math at all. It's definitely misinforming people because the website itself is called 'Made With Code' but absolutely none of the projects available to visitors are actually made with code.

Yes they are. Even badspot took notice of the washed out use of the word "Coding". Coding is not dragging and dropping a block from a list that contains that block alone.

If I do believe so myself coding is the same thing as programming

Programming: 1.
the action or process of writing computer programs.

The google made with code program does not allow you to write your program. It allows you to interact with an onscreen object. There is no option here.

You are also not giving instructions to a computer, intact the computer is instructing you. It tells you every move to make. soviet Russia

I don't think those first things are supposed to be the focus
and regardless of that, they aren't there to teach you how to code anything. the point is to show you what you can do. that's what the whole website is about
