yes but we didn't know about op's mom's situation for all we know it could have been something as simple as a root cbrown town (although his mum wouldn't go to the hospital but to the dentist)

yes, making fun of someone, about their mom going to the hospital (for an undisclosed reason at the time, it literally could have been anything from a cold to a terminal case of brain cancer), because of their religion, is very menial
