Author Topic: Animated PNGs are the best and you should use them  (Read 10206 times)

I found out about these a while ago when I noticed KoopaScooper's avatar was a .png, yet animated. I never knew they had full colour and alpha support though.

oh my god no wonder i haven't seen it moving in months, i use chrome and haven't gotten the extension yet.

APNG <<-->> GIF

APNG runs at 30 fps with filesize of 780~ kb
GIF runs at 20 fps with filesize of 1~ mb

APNG looks much prettier when looked at up close too. You can see some minor artifacts with the .gif thanks to that colour limit.

Pretty neat stuff, can't wait to see APNG become a default thing (if ever)

i got the chrome extention and i dont see any noticeable difference

It all really depends on the situation it seems.
Certainly if the animation was more colourful a stronger difference may result, but so far i'm digging the much higher framerates for a lower filesize.

How do you make a APNG? I actually can see a difference with APNG, It moves ALOT smoother and looks alot better than a normal gif.

can someone make a comparison that shows the differences

I exported an .avi through blender and used VirtualDub with a APNG plugin to convert it.

I'm trying really hard not to start a Chrome vs Firefox debate. Though saying that is probably gonna start one anyway.
