Take a look at what your adventure holds...

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. Shovel Knight has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly!

But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent Shovel Knight from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… Shovel Knight is for you!

What if development on the NES never stopped? What would those games be like today?

Shovel Knight is a platformer over a year in the making by the talented folks at Yacht Club Games. It features retro style that is not just an excuse for pixel art and chiptunes, but as a tribute to the NES, keeping in mind the capabilities and limitations of the system while giving things a modern spin. Shovel Knight includes new music tracks by original Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae, as well as notable influences from Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania, Mega Man, and DuckTales.

The game can be bought on PC, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U for $15. Linux and Mac support are on the way and other platforms are being discussed.

Additional features are planned for future release, including the ability to play as one of a handful of bosses in the campaign, 4-player battle (local only), and several different modes such as genderswap and challenge.

The Shovel Knight OST and Strike the Earth! - Shovel Knight Arranged can be purchased on the Bandcamp site for whatever price you choose to pay.

I've looked at this game a few times, like when Northernlion played it a while back. It looks pretty freaking sweet.

Doesn't look like authentic NES, too good looking.

looks more like a snes game

You're right, authentic was the wrong word to use

Really what I'm trying to say is that YCG tried to keep the game as close to a real NES game as possible, adding only what they felt was truly needed (such as extra layers for parallax scrolling) and removing anything that was more of a hardware issue than a feature (like sprite flickering or memory limitations); they describe it as asking "What if development for the NES never stopped? How would an 8-bit game feel and play if developed today?"

You can read about their thought processes on the subject here

This looks very fun. Will buy when I get money in a bit

This game also has r63 which is pretty hilarious.

R63?

Rule 63: For every fictional character, there is an opposite-gendered counterpart

It's not authentic NES

It is authentic pixelated loveiness

The "beat game without" is pretty brutal haha

this game is loving beast

I despise the Flying Machine level

The two soundtracks (the OST, containing music from the game, and Strike The Earth!, an arrangement of Shovel Knight music) are available on Bandcamp with name your price

I despise the Flying Machine level

Propeller Knight's stage is unanimously the hardest one in the game
