A month or so goes past without much happening around Valhalla base aside from a few patrol missions. The most interesting event to occur in the past month was when Simon went on patrol to intercept an "enemy craft" only to discover it was a crop duster who fell asleep at the stick.

NEWS FROM THE FRONT:

  • COUP IN CORYZA- Pro-Zentragothic partisans have staged a successful coup, ousting the Aesthian supporters and installing their own government! Following this brief but violent shift in politics, Coryza has officially joined the war alongside its new allies, the Huitzitlaotani Empire and Imperium Zentragothorum.
  • FALL OF GERVESIA- Huitzitlaotani air power has finally emerged dominant over the skies of Gervesia, allowing legions of drop-troops to be deployed behind Mercanan and Kintharian defensive installations. Completely surrounded and left with no path of retreat, all defending units were swiftly overrun.
  • MERCANA GETTING BLOWN OUT- With a sizable chunk of their military utterly wiped out in Gervesia, Mercana found themselves crippled and scrambling to coordinate the defense of their mainland from a Huitzitlaotani offensive. The Huits capitalized on this disarray and pressed the advantage, forcing the Mercanans all the way past the Tyrannic Mountains to the heart of their civilian and industrial centers in the far north.
  • ARUSSICA ROCKED BY REVOLT- Following a wave of mass conscription, the Imperium Zentragothorum has completely evicted the Arussicans from their borders and begun a counter-offensive of their own. At the same time, a violent separatist faction sprung up and began attacking both Arussican and Zentragothic soldiers, and as of today the entire country is a warzone. Aesthian brown townysts predict this may actually have a beneficial effect, as the more the IZ commits to conquering and pacifying Arussica, the less they can bring to bear elsewhere.
  • PORLAQ DECLARES WAR- ...against their neighbor Helios. Seeking to take control of the Helian Orbital Aetheric Harvesting Unit, Porlaq rallied its soldiers and staged a massive invasion of its miniscule neighbor. Just two weeks after the outbreak of hostilities, the Helians had already repelled the invasion and took the fight all the way to Serveik, where Porlaq officially surrendered.

Finally.

Bad weather grounded most of the aircraft today so there's really nothing to do aside from watch TV, work on the aircraft, or do forget all. It gave Simon much more free time than he usually has, he was able to sneak in an hour at the range, an hour in combat flight simulators, and spend the rest of the day reading stuffty cheap paperback books and video game magazines at the base store. Overall a very unproductive day.
4 hours left in the day and nothing to do but watch television and wait for 8 o'clock. Simon kicks back on the dirty red couch in the lounge, grabs the remote, and turns the TV on to Channel 11 News.

A female voice eminates from the TV speakers. "Give us 30 minutes and we'll give you the world."

Then a short splash screen intro. Then the news anchor appears on the screen. He swivels around in his chair to face the camera and looks at a sheet of paper on his desk.

"The most frightening news tonight comes to us from our ally Mercana as the Huitzitlaotani forces take over the nation's second largest city of Ridgewood last night. Over 300,000 Huitzitlaotani troops and their allies swarmed the city, defeating the valiant Mercanan soldiers who made their last stand in the city's central district. Reporter Laura Birmingham is speaking to one of the Mercanan survivors who managed to escape the city..."

I barely understand the news anchor as he is speaking Huitz, but I get the gist of what's going on thanks to a helpful graphic onscreen which shows the Huitz borders expanding into Mercana and Gervesia.

I watch the same news.

"Great. We're losing."

I walk past Karl, who appears to be talking to the TV.
"Wait, what?"

I close a panel on my Typhoon, it's practically in brand-new condition with all of the maintenance work put into it; the Hornet is in the same situation, so I go to the maintenance department.

"Wait, what?"

I simply point to the TV screen.

"Jesus CHRIST!" I slam the magazines I was holding onto the ground.

"We're winning. The war could be over soon, Rye."
