Author Topic: I just got $1000 for a laptop, what should I get?  (Read 6117 times)

C'mon guys keep it in a different thread or something :panda:

I think I've pretty much fully decided on this one here: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152570

Any objections? It looks like it's got great reviews, and after taxes and shipping I'll still have around $43 to spend on a mouse or other accessories.

Very good choice.

But personally I'd get Windows 8 the forget off of it the moment it arrives in the mail. The only justification for using 8 over 7 is touch screen support, which that laptop doesn't have.

I'm going to give windows 8 a try before I throw it out the windows because overall it is a much more lightweight OS than 7 is, and apparently has some things going for it. If I don't end up liking the metro menu I've purchased StartIsBack and can use that if I need to.

fair enough, however I'd warn that explorer as well as the desktop/window manager (DWM.exe) is really unstable on W8

it crashes and restarts itself very frequently, which usually makes the system slow to a crawl for a good minute or so

also i c wat u did thar

Worst comes to worst I'll use my W7 install CD. Best case scenario I love 8.1 and stick with it permanently, and all is well.

Pretty much the title here. I got $1000 for my graduation gift to spend on a laptop for myself and I have no idea what I should get.

Ummm...what? I have had Windows 8.1 for about 6 months and not once has this happened to me... if anything my computer is faster.

ASUS is a Taiwanese company and Lenovo is a Peoples Republic Of China company...

what are you talking about im gunna take a lo-

hoh my god

Yeah but MSI is known for making notebooks from really crappy material and poor ventilation. I've heard a lot of bad things about their computers.

I've always had bad experiences with lenovos. They're very poorly made.

On the other hand, my $300 eMachines laptop is still going strong after around five years and it's my primary computer. Very sturdy, well-built machine. eMachines was acquired by Pavilion, which was then acquired by Acer. I recommend Acer laptops - their Acer Aspire line is based on the old eMachines.
