Windows 7 mainstream support ends in ~6 months. Windows 7 extended support ends in 2020.

does that mean I have 6 months to upgrade to 8.1 if I want to keep getting updates, or is there really no difference if I keep 7 well into the extended support phase

I know that. I am just judging the OS as it is out of the box. External programs that add the start menu do not count.
