What if someone is actually being edgy?

It depends. To describe someone who is being edgy as edgy without "edgy" being the primary insult of the sentence is fine. E.g. "Look at you, so dark and edgy. Go forget yourself." to describe someone who is pioneering a trend would be fine. However, the sarcastic response "you're so edgy and cool man!!!" made to someone who supports the genocide of black people is absolutely unacceptable. "tribal," "disgusting," "starfish," etc are all perfectly capable terms.
