DOGS MEGATHREAD

No, not that doge.

What is a dog?
If you are some idiotic mindforget, let me explain briefly.

A dog is a domesticated carnivorous mammal that usually has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, and a barking, howling, or whining voice. It is widely kept for work and sports.

Why should I care about this dangerous piece of fur?

Dogs have feelings too, you know. They have been beneficial to mankind for a number of reasons. Such as:

They are able to hunt animals for their owners.
Has been known to save lives and protecting owners from danger.
Some breeds are used as transportation in the snow.
Cuddly.

Okay, good point. Now where do I get one?

Whoa, whoa! Slow down there, hipster! Before your wallet loosens out of your pocket, you have to consider what breed is right for you. Not just say "I like this breed, let's get it".
You have to consider:

If the climate is warm or cold.
How many people are in your family, don't forget: small children sometimes don't get along with pets.
The health problems the breed can have, will you be able to afford if it gets sick?
How big can you have it? Tiny or gigantic?
How much will you need to exercise this thing? Will it be a couch potato or an athlete?
Is it good for apartments? Don't wake every neighbor up with your dog.
How much money you will spend on food, collars, dog beds, toys, a cage, and the dog itself.

Alright, I've made up my mind! I'm gonna get a dog!

Slow down, you loving lightning mcSanic the hedgehog. You have to realize that you have a lot of responsibility coming down on you. You will need to feed it, give it water, take it on walks, clean up after it deficates and urinates, bathe and groom it, and importantly, train it.

I've decided on everything, and I think I'm ready.

Are you sure?

YES SHERLOCK! Give me my damn dog.

Alright, here are a few websites to look at for getting a dog and caring for it.

TIP: look up ratings for your local animal shelter: if the dogs get sick often, don't get your dog at the shelter.

So I got my dog, why the hell won't it listen to me?
You probably need to train it. Practice getting it to come to you by clapping and calling it's name. Teach it tricks.

The most important tip for dog training:
Do not punish it harshly when the dog acts bad, a dog treated bad will act bad. Reward it for good behavior.

/discuss dogs and everything about them, do you have one?

i have four dogs because why not

I had four dogs until February 2013 when one died. Now I have three.

My house is rented, and the owners do not allow pets that shed.

I'm getting a puppy when I get home after vacation.

Call me lazy if you want, but dogs are too much work to be worth it in my opinion.

Agreed. I don't want dogs after I move out. I don't want to come home from work and find messes on the floor cause I was gone too long.

Cats can at least partially take care of themselves, but dogs need constant attention all the time.

To me animals are joy, and I wanna get a dog when I am older. Hopefully a Golden Retriever. Also I wanna be a vetenarian when I'm grown up.

Cats have ups and downs, but I wouldn't like a cat. They're not that interesting. They walk around, poop  in a box inside the corner, and sleep.

Spend $50 to make a dog a certified emotional support pet. No one can turn you down for owning the dog, if you pay rent and aren't a stuff renter, they can't complain or kick you out.

Or fake that you're a disabled person and it's a service dog.

I'd already have a dog, if my parents' house wasn't already home to 4 cats, 2 birds, 2 ferrets and a turtle

I want to get a fox, preferably a domesticated one from Russia

unfortunately the cost of importing an animal from Russia to USA is around $7000, not including round-trip airfare and the cost of the animal itself, so that's gonna take a while

if I can't make that happen, I'll either get a non-domesticated fox from sybil's den ($300 for the animal and ~500 miles round trip) or one of a few spitz breeds (samoyeds/eskies, malamutes, and huskies are what I've looked into so far)

i had an irish wolfhound but he died of cancer and eating too much cat litter. he was 6 years old and was named after the irish wolfhound my dad had as a kid. excellent dogs, i'd recommend one to anyone who has both the money and space for one. they're very gentle, are good cuddlers, and will provide excellent home security (as well as become a tourist attraction- we had a lot of people ask us if they could take pictures with the dog)

now we have 2 cats: an 8 year old lynx point siamese (who was half feral) and a 1 year old snowshoe chocolate point siamese (who, curiously enough, acts just like the dog did- even down to the absurd amounts of drool)

Or fake that you're a disabled person and it's a service dog.
this is punishable by law in several states

ergo: don't do that
