Spanish sentances are diferent than english, instead of I like pie, in spanish it translates to, the pie pleases me.
Yo quiero torta.
Yo=I
quiero=(I) To want(Or use Gusta)
torta=Pie
As you can see, your translating fails and before attempting another language, try to figure out your own.
To say the pie pleases me would be something like: La torta complace a mi, or something.
