buy a car-4 (unlocked very early in the game) and mod it
and for the love of god do not begin on multiplayer, do some singleplayer heists first

Don't even bother playing at all. You will NEED other people to play with. The reason he told you to play singleplayer first is so that way you level up to about twenty so you won't get kicked in multiplayer as much.
