America being a Christian country is not a belief, it's a fact. I'm Jewish and I know this, it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. It was founded on the basis of Christianity, and there isn't anything wrong with that.
There's a lot wrong with that both historically and ethically. First of all, America as a governmental agency is not Christian. The United States constitution says that you cannot make laws infringing on people's right to practice their own religion, but also that you cannot create laws supporting a specific religion. Because of this clause, it is legally impossible for the US to have an official religion.
Second of all, while it seems like a pretty harmless idea to decide an 'official religion' of the US, it contradicts one of the key tenets of what the United States government is supposed to stand for. The US government is supposed to be composed of the people, for the people, and when you create an official religion, the government serves a God with a moral agency instead of the general welfare of the people.
That is decreasing religious freedom.
I'm talking about, and I thought Planr was talking about, laws that lowered religious discrimination etc by not allowing prayer in the class and such
I'm 99% sure that there are no laws banning children from praying in school. There are probably laws preventing public schools from making children pray, which is a very different thing. Knowing Planr's extensive history of pulling facts out of his ass, I don't think it requires any research on my behalf to confirm this as true.
