Author Topic: Persistent mouse acceleration in virtually all games - still.  (Read 2091 times)

I made a topic about this earlier, and I literally don't know what to do anymore. It has ruined my gaming life completely. #FirstWorldProblems

So far I have:

Turned off Enhance pointer precision
Turned on Enhance pointer precision
Set maximum pre-rendered frames in the Nvidia control panel to 1 (application specific to the game)
Put the sensitivity to 6/11
Tried Cyborg's own registry fix (multiple times, I read the instructions very carefully)
Tried CPL's fix (same as above)
Tried Cheese's fix (even though it's not even made for Windows 7)
Tried MarkC fix (multiple times, I read the instructions very carefully)
Tried installing the official driver
Tried installing the official software
...and virtually all the different combinations of above methods. Infact I've probably missed a few that I can't remember.

Mouse acceleration does not persist on the desktop, and interestingly neither does it in Blockland. But in all other games (Rome total war I, DEFCON, OpenSpades, Ace of spades classic, Gmod, CS 1.6, etc.) there is a constant, horrible acceleration which feels like moving a table spoon through a tub of honey.

I mean it's really dense. I have literally no idea where it can be coming from, but it obviously isn't due to the game since they all act this way (again, apart from Blockland.) I don't understand how it can be due to the mouse, since the mouse acceleration is not active in the desktop but is in games.

Games that feature a Raw input option slightly reduce the problem but is still unplayable. CS 1.6 doesn't work for stuff either, even with all the startup flags that should make it take raw input and sort out any acceleration-related shenanigans.

And the great thing is, I had none of these problems in Windows XP. So much for upgrading.

Any suggestions that aren't what I've already mentioned would be highly appreciated as I'm beginning to scratch the bottom of the barrel googling for new solutions.

Specs:
Rat 7 mouse
Windows 7 64 bit
A semi-decent computer

EDIT: Could it be because I'm launching 32 bit games and using the 64 bit fix and drivers?

I'll try and look for a solution, but for now I'd just suggest increasing your sensitivity (to combat the density) and just dealing with it. Make the best out of it; acceleration can actually be useful at times, because you can make a minute adjustment or a huge swing-around with the same amount of space.

Source games actually have an option for mouse acceleration (as do some others). Make sure that's off! Also, "enhance pointer precision" is mouse acceleration. You said that you adjusted it, but it should make a small difference if it's off.

Record a video, please, of this happening. Open Broadcaster Service is a great free software for it.

Done. I've found that actually even entering the game window changes the way my pointer handles. 0:58 is when the problem is best depicted. Its hard to see the difference, but trust me it feels so much more... crisp and alert, i suppose, when I'm moving it over the desktop area. In the game window it's like I'm operating a slingshot.

Tell us your computer's specs.

i would think this is the same reason most people find it annoying

I actually quite like this. Not sure why most people don't to be honest.

have you tried using a different mouse

this question might sound really dumb (probably because it is) but it's worth a shot

Because moving half an inch and moving one inch should proportionately move the cursor the same amount of pixels with respect to the distance moved. It gives you more control over where the cursor actually is.

this

acceleration is the bane of accuracy and is the reason why a lot of people are never able to get good at competitive PC games (like TF2 and such)

if you figure this out let me know because I have the same mouse and OS, and computer... kind of weird actually

See if raw input works for you.

I figured this was less likely because you said it's not on the desktop, but is it possible that the acceleration is built into the mouse sensor?

You also probably already tried the CPL mousefix registry, but thought I'd throw that out there.

See if raw input works for you.

...did you even read the OP?

I'm not talking to the OP

Saw the video, it doesn't actually look that bad. (Unlike your desktop. Why the hell are you using the ugly-as-stuff Windows 98 UI when you could be using the much prettier Windows 7 UI?)

Oh dude, trust me it is. It is literally unplayable. Even in games such as real time strategy (DEFCON), it literally ruins the game for me because I feel severely handicapped simply by not being able to quickly respond and select units accurately, etc. And i'm not even going to start on FPS's, because those are out of the question.

Also about the theme: I got so used to windows XP in the classic theme that I just find the normal W7 theme to feel "Too far from home".

I have one more mouse but even if it works, i'm not going to use it simply because its wireless and has such a low dpi that it's quite hopeless in gaming.

Nope, as I said previously there is no acceleration what so ever when the mouse is in the desktop area, however soon as I move it into the game window area, the mouse seems to handle completely differently, but consistently different throughout a lot of my games. So this is not game specific, nor is it built into the mouse (unless it automatically turns on for games idk).

have you run a virus scan

and seriously try the wireless mouse, it's a serious opportunity to simplify the problem at least
